The Legend
In keeping with the spirit of Halloween, the history of our building (dating
back to 1906), and the evolution of women's underwear, the
staff of The BraBar & Panterie dressed in period costumes representing
key figures from the legend of 554 Desiree (Sharon),
our resident ghost, was involved in a torrid affair with a
famous politician (Shirley) who resided here in the early 1900's. Alas,
the relationship, and Desiree, came to a tragic end, leaving her restless spirit
tied to the building forever. Legend has it that Desiree's brother, a
local Piano player (Denise) murdered the politician, blaming him for her
untimely death
Desiree lived at a time when women's undergarments were starting to evolve
from torturous devices that squeezed and contorted women's bodies, into something
more practical and definitely more comfortable. She was thrilled when Mary Phelps
Jacob was awarded a patent for the first modern brassiere in 1913. It meant
her maid (Viviane) no longer had to spend hours lacing her into her tight corset.
Desiree's ghost was even more thrilled when The BraBar and Panterie opened,
making the building a place where so many women can find comfort, discovering
the joys of wearing a proper fitting bra. She knew it was the kind of place
her good friends, Holly (Donna), Ivy (Crystal), Tilley (Diana) and Connie (Debby)
would have loved to visit. You will find each of the change rooms has a small
plaque engraved with one of their names, honouring Desiree and her friends.
